I'm flying out from Dulles in a few hours to go to my project's East Africa office in Nairobi. The purpose of my trip is work related and my daily activities are going to be pretty boring (financial auditing, etc), but I'm going to try to squeeze in as much leisure activity as possible. One weekend possibly in Zanzibar, maybe a safari, explore Nairobi as much as possible, and, since KLM routes through Amsterdam, I'm going to be stopping over for a few days on the way back. I'll be back on the 21st, but until then, if you want a souvenir or a postcard or something, let me know. Any recommendations for things to do/see/eat are also welcome!
2012 In Review
2012 was an eventful year, if nothing else. Started a new job. Bought a car. Did a good bit of traveling. Became something of a food writer (gained weight). Made friends, lost friends, reconnected with old friends. I used 2012 as something of a free year to sort out some things in my life and not worry too much about the logistics of things. It was useful, in its way, and I think I'm ready for 2013 to be a productive year of growth and change.
I hope everyone had a great year and many happy returns for the one ahead.
I also really need a new camera. The 40D is getting harder and harder to work with and I fear it may die at any moment. The 6D is looking very tempting. Perhaps 2013 is the year I go full-frame.
a deep, soft mystery
“The world felt out of kilter. He could hear as it creaked through this new orbit. Something had happened, he thought, and the world had changed. Everything was out of order, and would never go back to the way it was. Everything had changed, and all it could do was continue in this new direction.
...
His heart felt enclosed by something formless, surrounded by a deep, soft mystery. He no longer had the faintest clue where his life was headed, and what might be waiting for him there. But as the eastern sky finally began to lighten he had a sudden thought: One thing I am sure of, he thought. No matter where I go, I’m never going to eat crab again.”
